10 Safety Rules Every Kid Scientist Should Know Before You Start

Most parents say no to an experiment because they're unsure what "safe" means for that specific activity. Ten clear rules, explained once, let you say yes far more often.
Hands-on science only builds confidence if it's actually safe—and kids follow safety rules best when they understand the reason behind them, not just the rule itself. Here are ten ground rules worth teaching before the first experiment, in language a kid can repeat back to you.
The 10 Rules
1. Read the whole instructions before touching anything.
Most accidents happen at step 3 because nobody previewed step 5.
2. Goggles go on before the first ingredient comes out, not after something splashes.
Protection only works if it's already on when the surprise happens.
3. Never taste anything in the science corner, even things that look like food.
Baking soda and vinegar are safe—but the rule has to be absolute, not "usually."
4. Tie back long hair and roll up sleeves before starting.
A two-second habit that prevents most of the "how did that get in there" moments.
5. Ask before mixing anything not in the instructions.
Curiosity is good. Unplanned combinations of household chemicals are the one place to slow down.
6. Know where the sink is before you start, not after something spills near your eyes.
Rinsing fast matters more than rinsing perfectly.
7. Heat and flame experiments always have an adult within arm's reach.
Not "in the room"—arm's reach. This is the one rule with zero exceptions.
8. If something smells strong, step back and ask before leaning in closer.
A strong smell is information. It's not automatically dangerous, but it's always worth pausing for.
9. Clean up spills right away, even small ones.
A small spill left alone becomes a slip hazard or a "what is that now" mystery an hour later.
10. It's always okay to stop and ask "is this normal?"
The most important rule. An experiment that looks wrong should always get a pause, no matter how far along it is.
Teaching the Rules Without a Lecture
Ten rules recited in a row will not stick. What works better: pick the two or three rules that are relevant to today's specific experiment, and explain the "why" using something the kid just saw happen—a spill, a strong smell, an unexpected reaction.
